Over the last decade, empty nesters have driven the home building market to build smaller, one-level homes in gated communities with minimal maintenance requirements. It seemed this generation of Americans was looking for freedom from home improvement and landscaping projects in order to travel and enjoy their work-free lifestyle. However, as with all trends, the pendulum might be starting to swing in a different direction. Some empty nesters are actually building larger, multi-level homes with all of the amenities any five-star resort could offer. These homes have features for the entire family to enjoy together; and in some scenarios, multi-generational families are spending more time together after the children leave home than they did before. Indoor basketball courts, saunas, mutli-media technology and hot tubs are all sure to get the family excited. However, one of the key elements in Sharon and Dennis Rediker’s home building project is something they could never have dreamed of building—the lake.
